Update on Edge's Injury

Posted by Taimur Asghar On 3:10 PM 0 comments
According to ProWrestling dot com, With definitive word starting to break regarding Edge's Achilles tendon tear, focus has turned to how WWE will address the injury. Television is already taped for next week (and was scripted on the basis that Edge and Chris Jericho were the Unified Tag Champions), so it is unclear if WWE will make any official announcement of Edge's injury and the status of the belts until those shows air.

Edge will most likely undergo surgery and be out of action until early 2010.

PWInsider is reporting that the official diagnosis for Edge's ankle injury is indeed a torn Achilles tendon and could potentially keep him out of the ring until January 2010 depending on the severity.

We reported earlier that Edge suffered the injury at last night's WWE Smackdown/ECW event in San Diego, CA around five minutes into a match with Jeff Hardy. WWE officials and EMTs rushed to his aid at ringside and Edge later apologized on the mic to the fans in attendance. The match itself really never got going as Edge and Hardy were taunting at each other in front of the crowd when the injury took place. Live reports from the show indicate that Edge may have planted his foot wrong as he came down causing the injury.

The rest of WWE's Smackdown/ECW crew left first thing today for a flight to Honolulu, Hawaii in a tour that will continue on into this coming week in Japan and the Philippines. This injury obviously puts a dent in Edge as a Unified Tag Team Champion with Chris Jericho and plans are already said to be in play to get the belts off them. The company is also looking at footage from tapings this past week in Bakersfield, CA set to air for next week's edition of Friday Night Smackdown involving Edge to explain an injury.

Reports on Jeff Hardy's WWE Status

Posted by Taimur Asghar On 3:05 PM 0 comments
All indications are that Jeff Hardy still remains contractually uncommitted to a future in WWE.

While no one anticipates Hardy leaving for a rival group, it remains interesting that the wrestler WWE officials reportedly view, according to the Wrestling Observer, as the "most popular" babyface in the company is main-eventing WWE pay-per-views without a long-term commitment to the company.

According to wrestling gossip website The Sun, Hardy told Spain's Cuatro Network that he is hesitant to seal his long-term fate even while knowing he has as much as a decade left in the ring.

Hardy said."I don't know - I am 31 years old now and I don't like making plans for the future. I can wrestle until I am 40 but I don't want to make plans, I don't like thinking about what could happen between now and the next five years,"

The expectation from most industry sources is that Hardy will ultimately sign, presumably contingent on some sort of hiatus at the end of the summer.

WWE's pay-per-view performance is not what it once was, and the company is determined to boost buys even in the currently lukewarm economy.

Peter Clifford, WWE's senior vice president of distribution and affiliate marketing, told Multichannel News that despite lowering buyrate expectations to account for the less-than-ideal economic situation, WWE is committed to recovering its reputation of pay-per-view dominance.

One idea for pay-per-view turnaround is the greater utilization of on-demand services to promote its events. Clifford confirmed that WWE will create content for affiliates' on-demand offerings in order to hype its August Summerslam event. WWE will also begin offering prize incentives to customers who order consecutive events.

The new strategy also explains WWE's recent decision to change some of its pay-per-view titles, which included switching Unforgiven to Breaking Point, No Mercy to Hell in a Cell and Cyber Sunday to Annihilation.

“We’ve been doing these PPVs for a few years and we felt that some of the PPVs were a little flat in terms of what we wanted the titles to project, so we looked to see which ones we can rename,” said Clifford.
